About Only Mountain
Before arriving in Chicago in 2003, I spent two years in Missoula, Montana. It was my first experience with the Rocky Mountains and most anything west of the Mississippi River and it had a profound effect on me. My time there taught me a lot about memory and how your mind preserves these rough images of everything, no matter how hard you focus on them each day. My house sat at the foot of two 4,000-foot mountains, but even now, I can only recall certain aspects of their character, not their complete being. It's hard to explain, but it's something like trying to remember a dream right when you wake up; something akin to "tip of your tongue" syndrome.

The idea for Only Mountain came about after reading Michael Helsem's lovely prose poem in the first issue of "Sentence", a journal of prose poetry, in March 2003. I thought it was a fine sentiment for that illusive point where your memory turns to something like desire for a pure vision.

The picture on the main page is of the northeast face of Mount Sentinal from the southern tip of Mount Jumbo in Missoula, Montana. I took it in March of 2003, just before it started snowing, and just after I'd hiked to the top of Jumbo. I lived at the base of these two mountains from 2001 to 2003.
